Airing Super Bowl commercials early takes some of the air out of the main event, but it’s less deflating when that ad includes stars Morgan Freeman and Peter Dinklage lip syncing classic bars from Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes, respectively.
As part of a joint campaign for Doritos and Mountain Dew, the two actors perform verses from “Get Ur Freak On” and “Look at Me Now.” Dinklage’s scene is shot in an ornate, fiery room that seems to be a pretty clear allusion to his iconic role as Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones (Tyrion has a way with words, it’d be easy to picture him bumping Busta). Freeman’s icy environment could be a nod to his preternatural coolness even at 80 years old. Busta and Missy also make cameos, and appeared as coaches for Dinklage and Freeman in an earlier teaser ad.
This seems like it should be a hip-hop heavy Super Bowl, with Cardi B also appearing in an ad for Amazon and the Philadelphia Eagles rallying around Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares.”
